If you're after something more unique for the summer garden, then Cornflower Dealbata is ideal. Their flowers appear in a pinwheel shape in shades of lavender, flowering within their first year and appearing consecutively each year after, as it is a hardy perennial. A perfect choice for the middle of the border as it grows to heights of 90cm. Sow seeds from January to March inside or directly outside from March to May to see them appear from March to August.

Sow seeds indoors, under cover and kept heated as they germinate. Once they reach about 3cm, move seedlings into larger trays and grow on it cool temperatures. Once they reach heights of 5-7cm, pinch the top of their stems down to the first set of leaves and transplant outside. This will promote a bushier plant. If you prefer, you can sow these seeds directly outside from March to May also. Scatter thinly over well-prepared soil, ensuring all large rocks and weeds have been removed.
