Rose 'Paul's Scarlet', more commonly known as Hawthorn, is a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. 'Paul's Scarlet' produces blooms of bright red flowers. A popular and thorny shrub, the lobed leaves make a wonderful backdrop to these charming flowers that are ideal for adding character and colour to the spring garden border.

- Planting Plant in a hole large enough to take the roots when fully outspread.
- Soil Type Fertile, humus rich and well drained soil
- Pruning Prune in the Autumn time and then only sparsely, removing unrequired growing tips. Do not prune for two years after planting.
Roses should be planted firmly, to ensure that wind will not disrupt the roots. Apply a balanced fertiliser every 3-4 weeks in the spring/summer, and apply a mulch in the winter for protection. Can be pruned back to remove any dead wood or growth. It is best to plant roses in winter or early spring, provided there is little frost. To prepare your bare rose roots, soak them in a bucket of water for an hour to 24 hours (longer in spring). Then, dig a hole large enough to house the roots when fully outspread. Distribute the roots evenly around the hole and put in a little bit of fine soil to which has been added a small amount of bonemeal. Fill in with the rest of the soil over the roots and tread in firmly. The depth of planting roses will vary between 10-20cm, or as deep as they were in their pots.
